Dr. Anne Elise Stratton
Research interests: Sustainability transition
In my current role as a Postdoctoral Researcher, I am helping to lead the Bright Spots of Sustainable Agriculture Project at Universität Hohenheim in southwest Germany. Previously, my postdoctoral research at VU Amsterdam focused on scenarios to integrate legume crops into European crop rotations and implications for sustainable diets.
In 2021, I earned a PhD in agroecology from the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. My interdisciplinary dissertation research focused on farm management practices that can support both environmental sustainability and nutrition security through diversified crop production. I conducted participatory research in partnership with the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), local nonprofits, and a farmer network (Rede Ecovida de Agroecologia) in southern Brazil, integrating ecological experiments with qualitative interview and survey data.
Prior to my doctoral work, I received a dual BSc in Biology and Environmental Studies with a concentration in Food Systems from Tufts University in Boston, MA. I also have prior professional experience working for the nonprofit EcoLogic Development Fund to develop agroforestry and other sustainable development programs. As a whole, my work aims to inform transitions to environmentally and socially sustainable agriculture at local, regional, and global scales.
Outside of research, I am an avid ashtanga yoga practitioner, weekend bike-packer, and backyard farmer. Bringing the garden to the kitchen, I love to experiment with new foods and flavor combinations. Nourishing community by growing, cooking, and eating wholesome food with others is important to me, in research and outside of it!
